Input of area residents sought for Prosperity Plan

Open houses are scheduled in Wichita and other area communities to gather input on issues such as the environment, health, natural resources, transportation, water, and workforce and business development for the South Central Kansas Prosperity Plan.

The plan is a two-year project funded by a $1.5 million sustainable communities grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded to the Regional Economic Area Partnership.

Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey, Reno and Sumner counties are involved in the project.

Residents “must do more than just hope for a better future,” John Waltner, Harvey County administrator, said in a news release. “We must define what that future is and work together to see it become a reality.”

The project is led by a consortium leadership team, of which Waltner is chairman. It is made up of local governments, associations and nonprofit groups.

The purpose of the meeting, said project director Paula Downs, is to ask the public “What are the areas we should be focusing on? And how can we impact those issues?”

The meetings will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on these days and locations:

• Sept. 9, the Carriage Factory, 128 E. Sixth St. in Newton

• Sept. 11, the Cosmosphere, 1100 N. Plum in Hutchinson

• Sept. 12, the Wichita Boathouse, 515 S. Wichita

• Sept. 30, Theurer Auction Realty, 802 E. 16th in Wellington

• Oct. 2, the Train Depot, 430 N. Main in El Dorado
