Two passengers in a pickup truck died Friday when the vehicle failed to yield to a construction sign and broadsided a water truck along U.S. 54 near Pratt, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Both men killed in the construction site collision are residents of Amarillo, Texas, the highway patrol said. They were identified in a crash report as Jose Luis Cerda Salazar, 28, and Jesus Julian Salicido Jr., 39. Three others were injured.

The crash happened at 8:05 a.m. Friday as the pickup was traveling eastbound seven miles east of Pratt, the highway patrol said. Its driver, a 21-year-old man from Mexico, was taken to Pratt Regional Medical Center but refused medical treatment. A 27-year-old Texas man also in the pickup was transported to Wesley Medical Center. He was listed in critical condition Saturday, a hospital operator said.

A 19-year-old man in the water truck was in fair condition Saturday, a Via Christi house supervisor said.
