A flight taking mostly World War II veterans to see their memorials in Washington, D.C., will leave Wednesday morning from Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport.

Twenty-seven veterans, including 25 from World War II, will take part in the trip sponsored by the Kansas Honor Flight, a Hutchinson-based nonprofit. A Vietnam War veteran and a Korean War veteran will also be on the trip, organizers said.

Most of those veterans will be on the flight that leaves Mid-Continent at 7 a.m. Wednesday and returns at 12:15 p.m. Friday. Five veterans will be flying out of Kansas City International.

In addition to seeing the war memorials, the veterans will also visit Fort McHenry and Arlington National Cemetery.

More than 200 veterans have taken flights to the nation’s capital with Kansas Honor Flight since the group began making trips in August 2012, said Mike VanCampen, president of the organization.

A flight also is scheduled for Oct. 9-11 and another one is tentatively set for Oct. 30-Nov. 1.

While priority is given to WWII vets, VanCampen said, “We’ll eventually be transitioning to Korean and Vietnam vets.”

Veterans of any war who are in failing health also are put on the priority list, he added.

There is no charge for the veterans, but there is a $700 charge for the person who is required to accompany the veteran.
