For 15 years, Carol Coffey has diligently arrived at the Catholic Charities administrative offices once a week in downtown Wichita to volunteer.

“It is just her attention to detail and persistence, she’s a real blessing,” said Michael Donovan, volunteer coordinator for Catholic Charities.

Coffey, who owns three Scooter’s Coffee stores with her sister, says there are plenty of people who do more volunteer work across the city than she does. She just does what she can, she said, because she knows people need help.

She also volunteers at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in west Wichita, and when there are nonprofit groups holding fund-raising events — such as the Alzheimer’s Walk — Coffey, 67, often provides the coffee.

“We take community involvement seriously,” she said.

Why? It comes back to helping.

“My mother taught it was a good thing to help people.”
