— A St. Louis man is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly strangling his pregnant girlfriend with a lamp cord.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 26-year-old Michael J. Collins is jailed on $500,000 cash-only bond in the death of 27-year-old Denitra Jones. She was found strangled inside her apartment in Hazelwood Monday morning.

Collins is also charged in the death of Jones' 2-month-old fetus. Collins would have been the father.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive.

Jones was a teacher at a child care center on the Washington University campus. She had just started the job on Aug. 1.
