A man apparently lost his balance while walking his bicycle and fell into traffic, leaving him with critical injuries Tuesday evening, authorities said.

Wichita police Sgt. Donald Kimball said the man, whose age he did not know, was struck by a Ford pickup driven west in the curb-side lane of Harry near Washington. The collision remains under investigation, but Kimball said there is no apparent negligence on the part of the driver.

“He lost his balance at just the wrong moment,” Kimball said of the pedestrian.

He added: “It just looks like it was an accident.”

The man was transported to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in critical condition, according to emergency scanner traffic. Kimball said he suffered a head injury.

The collision was initially reported as a hit-and-run, but the truck involved was parked near the scene. Kimball also said police were interviewing the driver.

The crash site is in the 900 block of East Harry, just west of Washington.
