District: Campus student detained for threatening statement on Twitter

A Campus High School student was detained by authorities after posting a threatening statement on Twitter early Tuesday morning, district officials said.

The tweet was “a generalized statement” and did not target specific students or a specific building, Haysville Police Chief Jeff Whitfield said.

The tweet was apparently posted late last night, Whitfield said. A parent notified school officials, who in turn contacted police, he said.

District spokeswoman Liz Hames said the student has been suspended pending an expulsion hearing next week. Whitfield said he was told the boy is a junior at Campus.

An investigation by police and school officials determined it was not a credible threat, Hames said in a prepared statement.

Whitfield said police are gathering evidence and will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine what if any charges are filed.
