Wichita State has a second baseball commitment from the class of 2015.

Heights junior Keylan Killgore, a left-handed pitcher, gave WSU an oral commitment on Monday. He joins Circle junior Garrett Hutson, a right-handed pitcher, as athletes from the class of 2015 who say they will attend WSU.

“He’s got a big upside,” Heights coach Jeff Topping said. “He hasn’t even started to mature. He’s going to be a kid with a big frame.”

Killgore (6-foot-3, 155 pounds) grew up attracted by the idea of going away for school. When he visited other campuses this summer with his traveling team, he began to reconsider. He rarely plays without his parents and grandparents in the stands. He grew up watching Shocker games at Eck Stadium and hearing about pitching coach Brent Kemnitz and his style of coaching.

While he drew interest from Arkansas, he targeted WSU from the start.

“I started to realize, WSU, it’s my hometown,” he said. “Brent … I’ve watched him since I was little. His philosophy will fit in really well with the way I like doing things.”

As a freshman, Killgore struck out nine and picked off two batters in his first varsity start, a 2-0 win over Southeast. As a sophomore, he earned honorable mention All-Metro honors. Topping said he throws 82-83 mph and his curve and changeup are reliable.

“He keeps hitters off balance with his changeup and curve,” Topping said.

Killgore cannot sign with WSU until November 2014.
