The caretaker for an ailing man tried to rob him with the help of two accomplices early Monday morning, but they left empty-handed and were arrested a short time later, police said.

The incident unfolded shortly after midnight in the 1900 block of South Martinson, Lt. Joe Schroeder said. That is just west of Seneca and south of Harry in west Wichita.

The caretaker of the 50-year-old man forced her way into his house with two other people, Schroeder said. They demanded items from inside the house, but he refused to give them up. The three suspects then left without taking anything.

One of the suspects, a 28-year-old man, fired a shot into the air with a .45-caliber handgun, Schroeder said. The victim called 911 and officers responding to the report found the three suspects not far from his residence.

They included the 54-year-old woman who is the victim’s caretaker.
