C.J. Ziegler hit for the cycle, sparking the Wingnuts to an 18-5 victory over the RailCats on Wednesday night in Gary, Ind.

Ziegler started the onslaught with a solo home run in the first inning —his league-leading 27th homer of the season — as Wichita scored three times in the first inning. Ziegler hit a two-run triple during a four-run third inning to give the Wingnuts a 7-0 lead. In the fourth Ziegler failed to get a hit, but he reached base on an error, and he grounded out in the sixth. Ziegler walked leading off the seventh, then later in the inning doubled as the Wingnuts put up six runs. He completed the cycle with a single in the ninth inning.

Ziegler’s feat was a part of a 23-hit attack for the Wingnuts. Every starter had at least one hit. Brent Clevlen hit three doubles, and John Rodriguez and David Amberson each added three hits including a double.

The win put the Wingnuts 8 1/2 games ahead of the second-place RailCats in the American Association Central Division. Wichita has 11 games remaining in the regular season.
