A 33-year-old Missouri man died Tuesday after he lost control of a car on a gravel road in Elk County and hit a tree, according to a crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Joseph Brant Martin of Newburg, Mo., was among three people in the 1994 Nissan Maxima when it veered off of Elk County Road 18 and into a ditch around 8:15 p.m. about a mile south of Severy, the KHP said. The vehicle hit the tree and then overturned, ejecting two of those inside.

Martin, the driver, died from his injuries. His passengers, 35-year-old Justin E. Coats of Fredonia and 31-year-old Annette Michaela Shockley of Missouri, were injured, the patrol said.

Coats was flown to Wesley Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition Wednesday evening, a hospital operator said. Shockley was taken to Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, according to the highway patrol report. Her status was not immediately available Wednesday evening.
