Dwight Yoakam at the Orpheum
Country singer and movie star Dwight Yoakam will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway. Yoakam is known not only for his cowboy hat and blue jeans but also for hits such as Guitars, Cadillacs and A Thousand Miles From Nowhere. Hes also received acclaim for movies such as Slingblade. Civil War author at museum
Ken Spurgeon, a local historian, author and filmmaker, will be at the Museum of World Treasures at 6 p.m. Thursday reading from and signing copies of his new book, A Kansas Soldier at War: The Civil War Letters of Christian and Elise Dubach Isely. His documentary Bloody Dawn already plays in the museums Civil War exhibit. Copies of his book, a historical analysis of hundreds of letters written between a couple living through the Civil War, will be for sale at the event. Admission is free for museum members, $5 for students with an ID or $8.95 for adults, $7.95 for seniors and $6.95 for children ages 4 to 12. Back-to-school ice skating
The Wichita Ice Center at 505 W. Maple is putting on a Back to School Bash from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday that will include free group skating lessons from 12:30 to 1 p.m., skating demonstrations from 1 to 1:30 and a free public skate plus open house from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Admission, skate rental, lessons and prizes are free for school-aged children, but participants are asked to bring one school supply to donate.
