Derby Goodwill Store workers sifting through a box of donations Wednesday morning uncovered an explosive surprise.
Luckily, Derby Police Chief Robert Lee said, the hand grenade was a dud. But the scare drew the Wichita bomb squad and shut down the store at 1247 N. Rainbow Drive for about an hour, he said.
Lee said store employees called 911 about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday and reported finding what appeared to be a hand grenade, Lee said. Derby police officers responded but were unable to determine whether the explosive was live, Lee said, so they called for the bomb squad.
Technicians later determined the grenade was inactive and disposed of it, he said.
