The new superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy is a familiar face to some Wichitans.
Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson, who took command of the military school in Colorado on Monday, used to be the commander of the 22nd Air Refueling Wing at McConnell Air Force Base from 2002 to 2004.
According to Reuters News Service, Johnson is a 1981 graduate of the Air Force Academy. She was the first female commander at McConnell and now has become the first woman to assume command of the Academy.
The 1983 Rhodes scholar previously served as deputy chief of staff of operations and intelligence at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
When she became the commander at McConnell, Maj. Gen. John Becker, then commander of the 15th Air Force, was quoted in a June 15, 2002, Wichita Eagle article as saying:
“In Michelle we found the perfect combination of a commander and an aviator.”
