Wichita State’s volleyball team starts the season No. 24 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.
The Shockers return five starters from the 2012 team that advanced to the Sweet 16 and finished No. 23 in the poll. The Shockers are ranked in the preseason poll for the first time since coaches voted them No. 19 in 2009.
WSU plays four teams mentioned in the poll — No. 11 Hawaii, No. 19 Louisville, No. 25 Creighton and Northern Iowa, which received votes.
Defending NCAA champion Texas is No. 1, followed by Penn State, Stanford, Southern California and Washington. Kansas is No. 20 and Kansas State received votes.
WSU opens the season on Aug. 30 against North Dakota State in Orem, Utah.
