Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: The preliminary uniform crime report from the FBI for last year.

Why you’d want it: To learn more about crime across the country. Preliminary figures show law enforcement agencies reported a slight increase in violent crime last year compared with 2011. Property crimes decreased slightly.

Where you get it: Go to www.fbi.gov/stats-services/crimestats. Then click on the icon for the 2012 preliminary report.

How much does it cost: The information is free.
