A man who was crossing the railroad tracks at Hydraulic and Pawnee was struck and killed by a train sometime before 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

That’s when calls came in to emergency dispatchers from witnesses reporting a train accident. Fire and EMS personnel arrived before Wichita police did and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Wichita police confirmed that the pedestrian who was killed was a man but did not provide additional information.

Police Lt. James Espinoza said the man walked across the tracks at the same time a train was approaching. He said the conductor gave several warning signals with the train’s horn, but the man continued to walk across the tracks.

Espinoza said a joint investigation between Wichita police and railroad investigators is ongoing and that more details would be available Thursday morning.
