Dillons to stop giving double value for coupons

Extreme couponers, beware: Dillons will no longer double its coupons as of Aug. 20.

The move comes as the store announces an initiative to lower the prices of thousands of products outright – a multimillion-dollar investment for the company, according to a news release.

For example, Tide Liquid Laundry Detergent for 48 to 64 loads will now be $11.99, $3 less than before, according to the release.

Sheila Lowrie, Dillons spokeswoman, said that 85 percent of customers do not redeem double coupons, and 70 percent of the coupons in last Sunday’s paper wouldn’t have doubled because of restrictions placed on them by either Dillons or the manufacturer.

“We wanted to invest this money to lower prices on the shelves for all customers to enjoy regardless of coupons,” Lowrie said.

“Double coupons were introduced in the late ’80s and early ’90s as a way for customers to stretch their shopping dollars. Today, many more customers are in favor of things like digital coupons,” Lowrie said. “We’ve seen a 40 percent increase in digital coupons.”

The Kroger digital app, which includes coupons, is among the top 2 percent of downloaded apps on iTunes, Lowrie said. The digital app has never provided coupon doubling.
