A 59-year-old woman on Monday evening thwarted a purse-snatching attempt by a man in his 20s in downtown Wichita, police said Tuesday.

The woman was walking to her car about 5:30 p.m. in the 200 block of East William when the man attacked her from behind, Lt. Steve Kenney said. She fought with the man as he attempted to pull the purse off her shoulder, but the attacker finally gave up and left without the purse, Kenney added.

She was treated for a cut on her hand at a local hospital and released, Kenney said.
