Union Pacific Railroad said Monday it is spending $20 million on improvements to a rail line extending from Paola to Coffeyville in eastern Kansas.

The improvements include replacing 136,500 railroad ties, installing 68,700 tons of rock ballast and renewing surfaces at 219 road crossings.

The work began in July and is expected to be complete by the end of October, the Omaha-based railroad said in a news release.
