  • Published Sunday, August 4, 2013, at 6:47 p.m.

Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: Sedgwick County’s recommended budget for next year.

Why you’d want it: To learn how the county plans to spend taxpayer dollars. The proposed budget is broken up by department and gives information about services that each department provides. County commissioners will vote on the budget at their meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday in their chambers on the third floor of the courthouse, 525 N. Main.

Where you get it: Go to the county’s website, www.sedgwickcounty.org. Click on the 2014 budget link under the “News and Events” menu.

How much does it cost: The information is free.
