Wingnuts beat Newark 9-2

The Wingnuts again saved their runs for the late innings, beating the Newark Bears 9-2 on Saturday night in Newark, N.J.

A night after rallying from five runs down in the ninth to win in 10 innings, the Wingnuts struck for three runs in the eighth Saturday and added five more in the ninth to blow away the Bears.

Jake Kahaulelio, John Rodriguez and C.J. Ziegler all hit home runs for the Wingnuts. Kahaulelio’s eighth-inning homer tied the score 2-2. Abel Nieves put Wichita on top with a two-run single with two outs.

Rodriguez had three of the team’s eight hits, scored three runs and drive in three.

Justin Klipp (5-2) went seven innings and picked up the win. Lincoln Holdzkom and Daniel Bennett eached pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Wingnuts own the American Association’s best record at 48-25. They wrap up the three-game series Sunday with the Bears, a member of the Can-Am League. The road trip continues with four games against Rockland and three against New Jersey, two more Can-Am foes, as the Wingnuts vacate Lawrence-Dumont Stadium during the NBC World Series.

Wichita returns home Aug. 13.
