One of the hottest topics at this year’s 33rd annual KKOA Leadsled Spectacular in Salina was the unseasonably cool weather that greeted show-goers. Temperatures in the 70s and 80s were a welcome relief from the 105 degree-plus readings that scorched custom car lovers the previous two years.

The cars on display were as cool as ever, all 1,864 of them, according to Jerry Titus’ count. He’s the guy who conceived of the Kustom Kemps of America (KKOA) concept way back when. A former Wichitan, he now lives in Cassville, Mo., where he orchestrates the organization’s car show circuit.

“Friday looked like Saturday last year,” he said of the upswing in the car and crowd count. Both days were record-breakers this year, he said. “We’re back on track for picking up 200-plus cars each year,” said, who thought the event may have reached its peak at 1,600 cars.

The Leadsled Spectacular attracted plenty of cars that qualified for that description: low-slung Mercury coupes and sedans, Buick hardtops and chopped, channeled and lowered shoebox Fords. But there were also plenty of traditional hot rods, street cruisers and drag cars to fill your camera screens.

Forthwith, here’s some of what we saw through our little digital camera.
