Wingnuts rally for extra-inning road win

The Wingnuts rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to force extra innings, then scored two in the 10th to beat the Newark Bears 10-8 on Friday night in Newark, N.J.

The Bears scored four runs in the third and four more in the seventh, building an 8-3 lead. The Wingnuts’ offense awakened in the ninth. John Rodriguez led off with a single, C.J. Ziegler homered, Brent Clevlen doubled and Abel Nieves tripled to cut the lead to 8-6. With one out, Johnathan Davis walked, John McDonald singled and Ryan Khoury capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.

In the 10th Ziegler and Nieves reached on singles, Cole Armstrong’s two-out single scored Ziegler for the go-ahead run, and Madison Beaird hit a double to knock in Nieves.

Josh Dew struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th to earn the save.

The Wingnuts finished with 18 hits, though they stranded 14 runners.

Friday was the first of 10 consecutive games the Wingnuts will play against teams from the Can-Am League.
