Eagle editorial: Have a World Series weekend

  • Published Friday, August 2, 2013, at 12 a.m.

If it has been a few years since you’ve attended the National Baseball Congress World Series, this weekend would be a great time to visit Lawrence-Dumont Stadium and reconnect. And if you’ve never been to the tournament, see what you’ve been missing.

The World Series is starting its Championship Week with games beginning at 4 p.m. Friday and running nearly around the clock. The 16-team championship bracket includes several area teams as well as teams from California, Washington, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Missouri and Iowa.

The city of Wichita and tournament officials have done a good job revitalizing the 79-year-old World Series. There have been fireworks and discount and free nights. After every 7 p.m. feature game, kids can go down to the infield and run the bases.

Area businesses also have stepped up to sponsor various nights and, in the case of Papa John’s, the Championship Week. Restaurants and hotels are helping defray the travel and food costs of visiting teams.

Though the forecast includes the possibility of more rain, temperatures likely will be mild – perfect for spending the day at a classic ballpark watching a Wichita classic.
