A single-engine plane attempting to lift off at a Barton County airport flipped off the runway into a milo field Wednesday afternoon, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The pilot, Michael J. Yagel of Raymond, tried to abort take-off after the plane did not reach appropriate altitude, the patrol said. When he lost control, the plane, a 1946 Luscombe 8A, ended up in the field.

Both Yagel, 58, and his 66-year-old passenger, Leonard Maberry of Ellinwood, refused transport to a hospital, the patrol said. The accident happened shortly before 2 p.m. at Ellinwood Municipal Airport, which is about 10 miles east of Great Bend.
