If the first day was any indication, volunteers are going to be busy serving lunches to hungry children until school starts.
Organizers of the “Filling the Gap” lunch program reported Monday that most of the 15 sites where the meals were served in the Wichita area saw more children than last year on the initial day.
“We know there are more children in need,” said Sally Fahrenthold, who heads up the effort for Partners for Wichita, a nonprofit. “They really do need these lunches.”
Volunteers serve the lunches from noon to 1 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 9.
This is the third year of “Filling the Gap,” which provides lunches at no charge to children 18 or younger between the end of the federally funded summer lunch program and the start of school. About 8,000 lunches are expected to be served over the next two weeks.
Donations of snacks are still needed to help supplement the boxed lunches. Snack items needed include individual fruit and pudding cups, wrapped snack bars and crackers, packaged fruit treats, bananas or clementine mandarin oranges.
To donate snacks, send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or call Partners for Wichita at 316-263-1389.
The lunches will be served at sites in Wichita, Oaklawn and Haysville. The dates for Haysville are Friday through Aug. 9 because the school district’s summer lunch program ends later than in Wichita.
