A Cimarron man has died after a plane crashed Sunday north of Wilson Lake in Russell County, Kansas Highway Patrol officials said.

Technical Trooper Wayne Dotts said a single-engine lightweight aircraft crashed at around 12:20 p.m. in a field near the intersection of 200th Boulevard and Mellard Road, about three miles north of the lake.

No one else was in the plane at the time. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The dead man was identified as Rufus “Rusty” M. Woods III, 66, of Cimarron, according to Sheriff John Fletcher of the Russell County Sheriff’s Department.
