It’s been a year since Tony Ferraro opened his Logan St. Fine Wood Products in Wichita to sell high-end wood products he creates.

He sells furniture, cabinets, doors, floors and staircases, among other things, at 1824 E. Douglas just down from the American Red Cross Midway-Kansas Chapter.

Ferraro also still has his construction business, Ferraro’s, to build new homes and remodel existing ones.

“I’m going between three things,” he said. “That’s what makes it crazy.”

Q. What made you open the shop?

A. Well, I think more the incentive of building unique things and traveling and doing jobs in other parts of the country. We weren’t visible. The showroom kind of put us out there.

Q. Is having the shop what you imagined it would be?

A. Everything and probably more. … We’re just busy. We’ve met a lot of people. We’ve been doing a lot of fun projects. … It’s crazy, and it’s hectic, and it’s fun, but it’s hard. It’s a lot more work than I thought it would (be). … It is what it is. I set myself up.

Q. Anything keep you up at night?

A. I think about stuff all the time. … Design stuff. People are wanting stuff done quicker these days. The old days they kind of let us go at our own pace. … That’s the downside of it right now. It’s not as much fun as it used to be. … When I was building my own house (in 2010), it was the best thing I could have done because it reinforces what the homeowner goes through. I say it’s like watching a puppy grow up. If you see it every day, it never changes. … But if you don’t see it for a week, two weeks, it grows. The same mentality.

Q. Any regrets with the store?

A. None at all. Nah. It’s been awesome. It really has. It’s been fun. I’m glad I did it. We’re providing something nobody in town’s really doing.

Q. What’s one thing few people know about you?

A. I used to race racing greyhounds. … I raced all around the country, actually. … I used to breed, raise and train them for racing.
