A Kansas man pleaded guilty Monday to an Internet sex crime that took place while he was in a treatment program for sexual predators at Larned State Hospital.

Mark D. Brull, 38, pleaded guilty in federal court in Wichita to one count of transferring obscene material to a child, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom’s office said in a news release Monday.

Brull has been a registered sex offender since he was convicted in 1997 of indecent solicitation of a 13-year-old, according to a Kansas Bureau of Investigation report.

According to his plea on the Internet sex crime, Brull admitted:

While at the hospital he became friends with co-defendant Ryan J. Dancosse of Wichita. Brull gave his passwords to Dancosse for his social networking profiles including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Youtube, as well as his e-mail account.

With Brull’s knowledge, Dancosse uploaded pornographic images to Brull’s accounts.

In April and May 2011, Brull and Dancosse began communicating with a 14–year-old boy in Massachusetts via e-mail and telephone. Brull sent the boy to his social networking profiles, where he knew Dancosse had uploaded pornography.

The boy could view the images on his computer and then talk about them with Brull. The images included males performing sexual acts.

Inmates in the prison wing at Larned State Hospital do not have access to Internet, said Angela de Rocha, spokeswoman for Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services

“We believe Brull had a contraband cell phone that was smuggled in,” she said. “Since the incident, we’ve adopted policies that make it more difficult to get a contraband cell phone.”

Brull’s sentencing is set for Oct. 4. Brull’s defense attorney and prosecutors will recommend to the judge a sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

Dancosse, 40, previously pleaded guilty to one count of receiving child pornography. He is set for sentencing Oct. 2.
