A 34-year-old mother was arrested Saturday on suspicion of two counts of child endangerment.

Wichita firefighters responded to a monitored smoke alarm call shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday in the 2300 block of South Stoney Point, near Pawnee and Maize Road, according to Sgt. Bart Brunscheen, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.

Firefighters saw smoke, through a window, but no fire, Brunscheen said. They also saw two children, 1 and 4, inside.

After forcing a door open, police and firefighters found food left cooking on the stove. Firefighters told police it could have turned developed into a house fire, Brunscheen said.

The mother of the two children was found asleep on the couch, Brunscheen said, “Officers believe she was under the influence of something and was arrested.”

EMS crews were called to the scene to check the children for smoke inhalation.

The children were released at the scene to a third party, Brunscheen said.
