People have dropped off 9,000 truck loads of tree branches and brush at a free storm debris collection site Sedgwick County opened earlier this month.

Public works director David Spears said most people have abided by rules that the site is for storm debris only and not bulky waste such as appliances.

The site at 63rd Street South and Meridian near the Big Ditch is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. It will be open at least through July.

The county will burn the debris at a later date.

The site is open to residents, cities, townships and tree service businesses.
