Kansas’ unemployment rate for June was 5.8 percent, unchanged from May, according to information released Thursday by the state Department of Labor.

In a news release, the department said the “labor market posted another vigorous increase in jobs over the month.”

While the non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate didn’t budge from May to June, the seasonally adjusted rate ticked up to 5.8 percent, from 5.7 percent in May. Adjusted rates take into account changes in job markets that can be attributed to seasonal factors. The seasonally adjusted rate in June 2012 was 5.8 percent, the same as this year.

Nationwide, unemployment rates rose in 28 states in June, compared to May. They fell in 11 states and were unchanged in another 11, according to information from the federal Labor Department.

In Kansas, officials said job gains were seen in the leisure and hospitality industry and in business and professional services. Job losses were recorded in construction, especially in heavy and civil engineering construction. There also were significant losses in federal government positions, according to the state Labor Department. Those could be a reflection of furloughs and spending reductions instituted as part of budget cuts.

“Initial unemployment claims were down 2,064 from May and down 2,333 from last year,” Secretary of Labor Lana Gordon said in a statement. “Fewer people coming into the unemployment system means more Kansans finding work and staying employed.”
