Three restaurants closed on unusual days
My Tho, 500 E. Central, 316-262-5452: It never fails. A hankering for pho hits you on a Tuesday. But this popular purveyor of the delicious Vietnamese soup cant help you on Tuesday or on Wednesday, either. Those are the restaurants two days off. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays through Sundays.
Paleteria La Reyna, 2925 Arkansas, 316-831-9196: Its usual for Mexican restaurants to close on Mondays. But this restaurant, known for its fabulous tacos and colorful Mexican ice cream counter, chooses to closes in the middle of the week on Wednesday. Dont worry. If you forget and show up anyway, Taqueria El Paisa is just a few blocks the other direction at 2227 Arkansas and an excellent choice, too. Paleteria La Reynas hours are 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Garden Grill Cafe, 300 N Main St., 316-978-9213: You wont want to plan to meet your friends for a fabulous vegetarian pizza on Saturdays at Garden Grill Cafe. Its the only day of the week the cafe is closed, which chef/owner Miguel Larcher takes off for religious reasons. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.
New patio at Siena Tuscan Steakhouse
Siena Tuscan Steakhouse, the fine dining restaurant that opened in January inside the Ambassador Hotel at 104 S. Broadway, is adding a patio. The gated-off area, which has room for about 24 seats, is right on Douglas and looks at over the bustling intersection of Douglas and Broadway. It should be ready to go by Friday, said executive chef Marshall Roth.
The patio is pretty close to Douglas, and during daytime hours, its pretty traffic-noisy. The Ambassador staff will be adding tall plants that should help cut down a bit on the noise. The patio also is on the north side of the hotel, meaning that its shaded during lunch and dinner hours.
Another recent addition is a Chef tasting menu, which Roth introduced last week. The option allows diners to sample a multi-course menu, which changes every day on Roths whim. Five courses are $75, or $110 with wine pairings. Eight courses are $95, or $145 with wine pairings. For a reservation at Siena, call 316-440-5300.
Bike Night back at Biggins
About a year ago, Emerson Biggins at 808 E. Douglas stopped putting on its Bike Nights after the crowds migrated to a competitors weekly event. But that event is no more, so Biggins has revived its Thursday-night Bike Night.
It includes food and drink specials and will feature live bands at Rock Island Live. Bikers are invited any time during the day, though most come between 5:30 and 10 p.m. A parking area is blocked off in front of the bar. On July 25, Bike Night will include a benefit bike wash for Bikers Against Child Abuse from 6 to 9 p.m. Itll feature a live band, raffle items and more. For more information, call 316-303-9800.
