The Wichita Wingnuts tied the franchise record for consecutive wins with their 11th straight on Monday night, defeating the Sioux City Explorers 2-0 at Sioux City, Iowa.
Chris Smith led the Wingnuts by pitching eight scoreless innings on just 95 pitches. Smith gave up four hits, walked one and matched a season-high with nine strikeouts.
Smith retired 13 of 14 batters from the third inning through the seventh and allowed just two runners past second base. Smith also retired the leadoff batter in every inning.
The Wingnuts broke a 0-0 tie in the sixth when C.J. Ziegler scored Jake Kahaulelio with an RBI single after Kahaulelio reached on a walk with one out.
Wichita added another run for a 2-0 lead in the ninth when Cole Armstrong doubled to advance Abel Nieves to third and David Amberson’s squeeze bunt down the first-base line scored Nieves with one out.
Josh Dew struck out two in the ninth to close out the game for the Wingnuts and earn his 13th save.
Richard Salazar took the loss for Sioux City, allowing one earned run and four hits in seven innings. Salazar also walked three and struck out five.
The series concludes tonight in Sioux City. The Wingnuts return home Thursday for a series against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
