Four teenagers took a joyride Sunday morning that left one in serious condition with a head injury, Wichita police say.

The incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. when four children – two 15-year-olds, a 12-year-old and a 9-year-old – took their mother’s rental vehicle without permission and began driving around the neighborhood, according to Sgt. Scott Brunow.

The 12-year-old was driving the vehicle in the 1100 block of South Quentin, near Harry and Hillside, when one of the 15-year-olds tried to climb out onto the vehicle’s back end. The older teen slid off as the 12-year-old drove away, hitting his head on the street.

The 12-year-old drove the injured teenager to Via Christi Hospital on East Harry where he was then transported to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in serious condition. He later underwent surgery.
