Two children slept through their own rescue early Sunday morning.

Police recovered the children after the car in which they were sleeping was stolen. Their mother was checking into an Independence motel and had left the keys in her car.

Independence police alerted law enforcement agencies across the area shortly after midnight. About 45 minutes later, they received a call from Kansas City police officers, who had recovered the car near Truman Road and Interstate 435.

The officers found the two children still asleep and unharmed in the car. They soon reunited them with their mother.

Independence detectives continue to investigate at the motel, America’s Best Value Inn, at 13710 E. 42nd Terrace.
