An officer at the El Dorado Correctional Facility was discharged from Wesley Medical Center on Friday afternoon after falling one story from the inside of a tower earlier in the day, Department of Corrections officials said.

Officials at the prison discovered that the man had fallen at 10:38 a.m. after he failed to respond to a request to shut the outer gate, said Capt. Dale Call, El Dorado’s public information coordinator. The man had fallen from the top level to the second floor. The ladder between the two floors is 10 rungs high, Department of Corrections officials said.

EMS and fire and rescue teams from El Dorado and Butler County were called to remove him from the tower, Call said. The man was alert and conscious throughout, he said.

“He was not in any kind of bad shape when he left our facility,” said Jeremy Barclay, communications director for the Kansas Department of Corrections. “He was never in critical condition.”

Barclay said Tower One has “all of the proper railings up,” and officials will “certainly look into the cause.”

“Our first and foremost thought was to get him the care he needed,” Barclay said.

Tower One helps oversee the sally port, which inspects vehicles and goods coming in and out of the facility, Call said.
