The 29-year-old Wichita man who drowned Friday while trying to retrieve a boat at El Dorado Lake has been identified as Oscar Rodriguez Vargas, Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet said.

A dive team found and recovered Vargas’ body at 6:30 p.m. Friday, more than two hours after he apparently stepped off an underwater ledge into nearly 20-foot-deep water. He disappeared while wading toward his boss’ boat, which had drifted from the shore.

Vargas was not wearing a life jacket and apparently couldn’t swim well, Herzet said Friday night. His body was found about 100 feet from the shore at Bluestem Point and Goose Cove, located on the east side of El Dorado Lake.
