An 8-month-old girl taken to the hospital has a skull fracture, and her parents say they do not know how it happened.

Her mother, 18, and her father, 19, brought the infant to Wesley Medical Center for an unexplained high fever and a head injury around 8 a.m. Wednesday, police said Friday. Upon further testing, doctors found the baby had sustained a skull fracture.

“There were some inconsistencies in terms of exactly how the skull fracture might have come to be,” Lt. Doug Nolte said. “As far as whether it’s an accident or intentional is still to be determined.”

The Exploited and Missing Child Unit is investigating the case, Nolte said. No arrests have been made.

Police said the baby’s injury is not expected to be critical.
