Veterans received hero’s welcome

On June 21, 45 World War II veterans came home to a hero’s welcome at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport after their trip to Washington, D.C., to see their memorial built by a grateful nation in their honor. They were greeted by a throng of relatives, friends and patriotic citizens who waved flags.

The veterans were led through the concourse by bagpiper Andrew Powell. Vocalists Cary Hesse, Mary Halsig and Sarah McQuery led singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America” and World War II-era songs.

A big “thank you” to Southwest Airlines for donating passes for all 45 veterans. Thanks also to the Wichita East High School JROTC members who presented the colors, the Legion Riders and the McConnell Air Force Base volunteers who helped with the veterans’ wheelchairs and bags.

Kansas Honor Flight will have a flight of 27 World War II veterans leaving July 17 and returning July 19. For more information, visit kansashonorflight.org.

Wrong to move

It was no surprise to me that the Wichita school board voted to move Southeast High School (June 25 Eagle). However, the fact that the vote was unanimous was very shocking. Then I read that one board member said her decision was based mostly on the fact that a large percentage of the current students wanted a new school. I find this to be quite odd.

When you are in high school, you think you know everything. Then you get a little older and realize that’s not the case. The board member should have based her vote on what the adults had to say about it.

I graduated from Southeast, and now I live in the neighborhood. I think it’s totally wrong to move the school. It’s very frustrating to me to see how this was handled by the school board.

All these towns around us are building new schools, and people are taking their children out of Wichita public schools. So our solution is to take one of our own schools and move it out of the neighborhood it serves? I fail to see the logic in this decision.

Try Kaw City casino

Regarding an Opinion Line complaint about the tobacco smoke at the Kansas Star Casino: All nonsmokers should take the 90-mile drive to Kaw City, Okla. The new SouthWind Casino there is smokeless, which makes playing the machines a pleasure.

It’s a small casino, with no restaurant and only slots. I’ve been three times, and two of those times I came home with a nice jackpot.

Until the Kansas Star adds a glassed-in, smoke-free place to gamble, I’ll boycott it and drive to Kaw City.
