Authorities have identified the swimmer who drowned Saturday at Cheney Reservoir as 19-year-old Marcus Marqaiz Hutton of Wichita.

Hutton was swimming with friends when he went under the water around 5 p.m. Saturday and did not resurface after trying to help a friend in distress, Reno County sheriff’s Deputy Lee Johnson said via the sheriff office’s Facebook page. Witnesses told law enforcement Hutton swam toward his friend, grabbed his shirt and got him to shallow water, where others could aid in the rescue, Johnson said.

When the friends turned around, Hutton had disappeared.

Authorities recovered Hutton’s body around 8 p.m. Saturday after searching for about three hours. He was found using sonar, Johnson said.

Johnson said the friends were swimming near the lake’s yacht club, located along a western shore, when Hutton drowned.
