Police say a 4-year-old girl taken to a local hospital in serious condition after she nearly drowned Saturday afternoon should be fine.

Wichita police Sgt. Jim Merrick said the girl was swimming in a community pool during a family party when she went under the water.

She was in the shallow end of the adult pool, Merrick said, “and within 30 seconds, she stepped off into the deep end.”

Family members “saw her in the water, snagged her out and resuscitated her,” Merrick said.

“The family was on top of her very quickly.”

Authorities say the girl was submerged for about a minute. She was reportedly unresponsive for a short time, then coughed up water, authorities said.

She was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, where she was treated and released Saturday evening, Merrick said.

“It turned out well,” he said. “She should be fine with no permanent injuries.”

The incident happened about 5:40 p.m. in the 600 block of South Fawnwood, which is near Maple and 151st West in the Auburn Hills development.
