Heading out to catch some summer rays isn't exactly what it used to be. Sure, we're still happy — make that thrilled — to swim, play, relax and just have fun in the sun, but when you're slathered in sunscreen (as you should be) a glowing tan is harder to come by.

Which is why we're stocking up on bronzers and other sun-shimmering beauty and hair products this season. From powder to surf spray, here are seven items to add in to your summer makeup bag and hair care arsenals, because you don't need to skip the SPF to glow.

1. What: Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzing Powder, $38, bobbibrowncosmetics.com

Why: If self-tanners make you shy or you're just looking for a sun-kissed glow, this smooth pressed powder gives you a natural-looking “tan” without risking wrinkles.

2. What: MAC Temperature Rising nail polish in Tropical, $18, maccosmetics.com

Why: Keep the sunny theme going all the way to your fingertips with this glittery bronze polish that contains conditioners and UV protection.

3. What: Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, $25, sephora.com

Why: Ever wish you could get those perfect post-beach hair waves, even if you're literally states away from the ocean? This salt-infused spray mimics that sexy, sunny hair, adding volume and texture. Surf's up!

4. What: Avon Ideal Flawless BB Beauty Balm Cream, $10, http://shop.avon.com/

Why: Fake a deeper skin tone, moisturize, conceal flaws, hide redness and get SPF 15 protection all from one product. This BB beauty cream comes in five shades, so you can swap out darker lotions as your tan deepens.

5. What: Bronze Buffer, two for $10, bronzebuffer.com/

Why: You tried your best, but sometimes faux tan accidents happen. (Why must ankles and knees be so hard?) No worries. These sponges erase the unwanted color in an instant, so your pretty glow stands out — not the error.

6. What: John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Lightening Shampoo and Conditioner, $5.99 each, ulta.com

Why: If you used lemon juice as a teen to lighten your hair, here's a new spin on creating highlights. This shampoo and conditioner lightens blonde hair the more you use it, so it looks like you've been out in the sun all day, even if you were actually escaping the heat inside clearing out your digital video recorder with the air conditioning on blast.

7. What: Benefit's The Bronze of Champions bronzer kit, $32, www.sephora.com

Why: Give your eyes, lips and cheeks an instant bronze boost with this box brimming with Watt's Up! Soft Focus Highlighter for Face; Creaseless Cream Shadow in Bikini-Tini; Longwear Powder Shadow in Thanks A Latte; Hoola Bronzing Powder (with a powder brush); Ultra Plush Lip Gloss in Hoola; and They're Real! Beyond Mascara. Um, we're buying it just for the fun product names.
