Bob Kennedy puts it simply: `I've waited all my life for this car.' He became enthralled with a '34 Ford 5-window coupe he saw on his newspaper route when he was a kid and vowed that some day he would own one. Now he does and he says he would not change a single thing about it.
An ultra-clean Ford-in-a-Ford installation powers the Kennedy coupe. The engine is a 351 Ford V-8, bored .40" over, featuring GT40 aluminum heads, an Edelbrock RPM intake, Fast EFI fuel injection, Comp Cams roller camshaft and Patriotic headers.
The factory steel dashboard was retained by car builder Butch Dysart, who extended the lower edge with a fiberglass panel to mount the Vintage Air heating and cooling vents and controls. The amazing burled walnut effect was created by Zach Noel at All Angles Collision Repair and Restoration.
Morgan-Bulleigh covered the Glide bench seat in supple buckskin tan Cessna Citation leather and trimmed the door panels and the remainder of the interior in the same material before installing a fresh headliner. The rear window still cranks down, as per factory specifications.
The `suicide' doors were factory original on the '34 Ford coupe and make getting in and out of the car a breeze. The paint scheme replicates a 1938 Ford hue, Ford Cloud Mist Gray, accented by '34 Ford Tacoma Cream on the Wheelsmith wire wheels. Howard Barnett was flown in from Santa Fe, N.M., to handle the paint application.
The beautifully sculpted `cowcatcher' '34 Ford grille is a Bob Drake reproduction item, stylishly topped off by the factory greyhound hood emblem. Vintique headlights and chrome horns adorn either side of the grillework.
Wheelsmith custom-built the 8-inch wide rear wire wheels topped by a set of their hubcaps. The tires are 235x70Rx16 BF Goodrich TA's. The rear rolling stock mounts to an 8.8" Ford rear end narrowed by Rob Holzman carrying a set of 3.73 positraction gears.
Believe it or not, Bob Kennedy was actually given a prescription to build his dream car. His doctor obliged with orders to rebuild his '34 5-window coupe for `mental exercise, stress reduction and time consumption.'
