The Kansas Department of Revenue said Tuesday it had seized three Wichita businesses for nonpayment of taxes.
According to the state, Wolmac, doing business as Marys Supper Club, 4545 S. Hydraulic, owes $157,536. It said R&Js Tire and Wheel, 1590 W. 21st St., owes $36,307. And Beards Floral Design, 926 W. Second St., owes $16,926.
Officers seized all known bank accounts, on-site cash, business inventory and personal assets belonging to the owners. The businesses were sealed, and the assets will be sold at public auction to pay the taxes owed, according to state officials.
Department spokeswoman Jeannine Koranda said the decision to seize a business is more a matter of the departments relationship with the owners than the amounts of money involved. The department typically tries to reach the owners and set up a repayment agreement. It will make telephone calls and send letters, file tax liens, impose bank levies and execute on-site till taps before seizing a business. The business owners could still pay the taxes and recover the assets, she said.
Seizing the business is the action of last resort after the letters and payment plans havent worked, Koranda said.
