Cigarettes stolen from shop for second straight day

For the second day in a row, employees at Quick Central Shop, 501 E. Central, came in to find cartons of cigarettes missing.

The robber entered the store through a broken window, and stole two cartons of Newport cigarettes and one carton of Camels, Wichita police said.

Nothing else was taken from the store.

Police are searching for a suspect in the burglaries, which happened on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Wichita Police Lt. Doug Nolte said Friday the same suspect may have been involved in both burglaries. There was no surveillance video taken at the scene.

“Obviously any time someone steals something, they’re trying to convert it to some sort of currency that’s useful to them,” Nolte said. “Cigarettes are expensive, and if they can take this and sell it out on the street, it’s financially profitable to them.”

Police are asking the public to keep an eye out for suspicious activity in the area east of Broadway, and to keep items away from windows and other areas where “a grab and smash situation is easy to accomplish.”
