Hillside and Mount Vernon intersection closed for the weekend after water main break

The intersection at Mount Vernon and Hillside will be closed to traffic through the weekend after a water main installed more than 60 years ago broke Thursday morning.

The 12-inch, cast-iron pipe that was installed in 1952 broke about 1 a.m., said Joe Pajor, deputy director for Wichita’s public works and utilities.

Repairs required a considerable amount of excavation, so pavement repairs will need to dry over the weekend.

Water was off for the area all day but was expected to be turned back on by early Thursday evening.
