Braxton J. Woods, 13, died and his older brother was injured after their 1988 Ford Mustang with racing slick tires slammed into a wooden utility pole Wednesday night.

Police said the 20-year-old brother was speeding shortly after 9 p.m. on 27th Street near Elmwood Avenue when he lost control and slammed the passenger side into the pole. The impact sheared off a four-foot section of the pole that embedded inside the car, shoved the passenger seat behind the driver seat and shot debris into another vehicle at a stop sign, breaking that vehicle’s window.

A bystander pulled the brothers from the mangled car and performed cardiopulminary resuscitation on the younger boy, who later died at the hospital. The older brother suffered back injuries. Both were wearing their seatbelts. They live in the neighborhood and had just left church, police said.
