Dallas Baptist baseball coach Dan Heefner and his family were in Wichita on Monday to meet with Wichita State athletic director Eric Sexton about the Shockers’ coaching vacancy.

Three sources close to the athletic department confirmed the meeting, believed to be the first between Sexton and a candidate to replace Gene Stephenson, who was fired June 4 by Sexton after 36 seasons.

Heefner has been Dallas Baptist’s coach for six seasons after three more as an assistant coach. The Patriots are scheduled to join the Missouri Valley Conference for baseball in 2014.

The Patriots are 216-123 under Heefner, including NCAA regional appearances in 2008 and 2012 and a 2011 super regional loss to California.

Dallas Baptist was 30-30 this season, the program’s first non-winning season under Heefner. DBU finished tied for sixth in the 10-team Western Athletic Conference.

Heefner was an NAIA All-American at Olivet Nazarene (Kankakee, Ill.), then received his master’s degree from Northern Iowa. He has also been an assistant at UNI and Creighton.
